Thrive goes to Scotland

Fourteen of us from across three countries—eight from the United States, five from the United Kingdom, and one from Australia—came together for the first ever Scotland Thrive. We were especially blessed to be accompanied by two newly ordained Jesus Youth priests, Fr Mathew from the USA and Fr Chris, who had been ordained just two days before the trip. Our journey took us from Leicester to the Isle of Skye, where many of us experienced hiking and camping for the first time.

Each day began with Holy Mass celebrated in the beautiful outdoors, reminding us that Christ was at the centre of our journey. Steep climbs, relentless rain, and fierce winds tested us physically, including one night when a tent pole snapped and we spent the night under little more than a makeshift blanket. The following day, after we prayed the Rosary for a lost phone, it was found along with a much-needed water source—a beautiful reminder of God’s providence. Despite torrential rain, hail, and lightning, no one was left behind. We carried one another’s packs, encouraged those who were struggling, and finished the hike together.

Looking back, my greatest memories are not the spectacular scenery, even though the Scottish Highlands were breathtaking, but witnessing the beauty of genuine fellowship. In the Eucharist, the Rosary, the conversations along the trail, and the way everyone willingly carried each other’s burdens, we encountered Christ in one another. It was a pilgrimage that challenged us, strengthened our faith, and reminded us what it means to journey together as one body in Christ.
