Shepherding with Simplicity
One of the most memorable moments of today was the visit of Bishop George Pallipparampil, Bishop of the Diocese of Miao, Arunachal Pradesh, and the Ecclesiastical Advisor of Jesus Youth India.
What touched us most was not merely his position but his heart. His enthusiasm for the mission, his deep concern for the people of the Northeast, his simplicity, and his down-to-earth way of interacting with everyone left a lasting impression. There was no trace of distance or formality. Anyone in his presence would immediately feel welcomed, comfortable, and valued. It was a beautiful reminder that true leadership is expressed through humility and genuine love.
# A Family Rooted in Prayer
In the first few days of the programme, we were accompanied by Lavinia, a Jesus Youth National Team member from Meghalaya who is currently serving with the Salesian Fathers in Assam.
Although the programme was held in her home state, her village was still three to four hours away, and because she had to return directly to her mission in Assam, she would not have had the opportunity to visit her family. Knowing this, on the previous day her father and five of her siblings travelled all the way to meet her.
We shared tea together. What seemed like an ordinary gathering soon became an unforgettable lesson. Before anyone touched the tea, the entire family paused to pray. One of the brothers arrived a little late, but even he quietly offered his prayer before taking his first sip.
Later, Lavinia shared that this is not unique to her family—it is the normal practice in almost every household in that region. Their faith is not reserved for churches or special occasions; it is woven naturally into the rhythm of daily life. There are indeed many beautiful practices from the people of this land that the rest of us would do well to learn and imitate.
Carrying Grief with Faith
Behind the smiles of the family was a deep wound.
Only recently they had lost one of the brothers in a sudden accident. The grief is still fresh. Their father, who shared a particularly close bond with his son, is yet to recover from the painful loss. Lavinia requested us to keep her family in our prayers.
As we sat with them, it became evident that while grief remains, faith continues to hold them together. Their quiet trust in God amidst suffering was a moving testimony.
Meeting Missionaries of Hope
Today I also had the joy of meeting Fr. Abin Thekkumthottam OFM Cap., a young Capuchin priest from Chirakkadavu in the Kanjirappally Diocese, who is presently serving as the Chaplain of Jesus Youth Assam.
Every such encounter reveals another inspiring story of missionary commitment and generous service.
Love That Makes Every Sacrifice Worthwhile
One truth becomes increasingly clear with every visit to the Northeast: it is impossible to fully appreciate the sacrifices of the priests, sisters, and missionaries from a distance.
Only when we come here, walk with them, listen to their stories, and witness their daily lives do we begin to understand the extent of what they have willingly embraced—living far from their homes, adapting to unfamiliar cultures, facing countless challenges, and quietly serving people with unwavering dedication.
What sustains them is neither comfort nor recognition. It is the love of Christ and a deep concern for His people.
Their lives proclaim a powerful message: when Christ’s love fills the heart, no sacrifice is too great, and no distance is too far.
