Fr. James Kottayil, S.J.: Kerala’s First Missionary and Martyr

Fr. James Kottayil, S.J., holds a revered place in Kerala’s history as the first priestly missionary and martyr from the region, whose life of selfless service and ultimate sacrifice continues to inspire generations.

Birth and Early Life
Born on November 15, 1915, Fr. James was the son of Chacko from Kattampack Kottayil (between Kuravilangadu and Kaduthuruthy) and Mariam from Mapilaparambil, connected to St. Mary’s Forane Church, Kuravilangadu. After completing his intermediate education in Thiruvananthapuram, Fr. James felt the call to missionary work and joined the Chota Nagpur Jesuit Mission.

Priesthood and Missionary Work
Fr. James Kottayil was ordained a priest on November 1, 1948, in Kurseong. Following his ordination, he dedicated himself to missionary work in the challenging fields of Biru and Jashpur dioceses. His passion for education led him to serve as the minister at St. Mary’s High School in Samtoli. His contributions to the Jesuit mission in the region, particularly among tribal communities, were deeply impactful.

Selfless Service and Martyrdom
Throughout his life, Fr. James was remembered for his unwavering dedication to the people he served. Bishop Patras Minch of Tamamunda Parish recalled the young Fr. James’s selfless spirit, while Fr. Agapit Tirki, S.J. and Fr. Chonas Lakara, S.J. shared memories of his influence in their formative years.

However, Fr. James’s mission came to a tragic end. On the night of July 13, during the feast of Our Lady of Rosa Mystica, anti-congregants opposed to the progress of the tribal communities hired assassins to halt his efforts. Fr. James was brutally attacked and stabbed. Despite receiving medical attention, including 13 stitches at Holy Family Hospital in Mandar, he succumbed to his injuries on July 16, the feast of Mother Mary of Carmel.

Memorials and Legacy
Fr. James Kottayil’s legacy lives on through the numerous memorials dedicated to him. His final resting place is in the Mandar Church Cemetery, and his memory is further preserved by a memorial slab in Nawatnr Parish. In his home parish, St. John the Baptist Church, Thuruthipally, Kerala, a memorial cross stands as a lasting tribute to his sacrifice.

Fr. James’s dedication to the upliftment of the tribal communities through educational, social, and spiritual means continues to inspire those who follow in his footsteps. His life and sacrifice are a testament to the power of faith, compassion, and the relentless pursuit of justice for the marginalized. Many still pray in the places associated with his life, remembering the profound impact of this courageous missionary.
