Chalo Andaman: A Journey of Faith, Adventure, and Transformation
A Call to Adventure: The Chalo Spirit IgnitesIn the world of teenagers, there’s no event quite like “Chalo”—the annual mission exposure program conducted by the Jesus Youth National Teens Team in India. This year, the call to adventure led 22 spirited young graduates from across the nation to the breathtaking Union Territory of Andaman. The mission? To set hearts on fire with the zeal of the Gospel. With participants hailing from Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Mumbai, Delhi, Assam, Meghalaya, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Pune, and Andaman itself, this diverse group embodied the true spirit of unity in mission. The journey began on May 31, 2024, and it was destined to be an unforgettable chapter in their lives.
A Divine Encounter: Retreat in Paradise
Imagine beginning your journey in the serene beauty of Andaman with a soul-stirring retreat. Emmanuel Joseph from Mumbai led the participants on a two-day retreat that was nothing short of a spiritual rollercoaster. Hearts were healed, burdens were lifted, and the love of God the Father poured into every soul present. The retreat was a deep dive into faith, with moments that brought tears of joy and profound peace.
Following this spiritual high, the participants were equipped for their mission through intense training sessions. They learned the art of prayer, the secrets to leading dynamic meetings, and the power of sharing their testimonies. The culmination of this training was nothing less than epic—a gathering at Corbyn’s Cove Beach where each participant shared their story, igniting a wildfire of missionary zeal. And then, as the sun set on June 4th, Bishop Visuvasam Selvaraj of Port Blair anointed each participant, setting them apart for the great mission that lay ahead.
Into the Heart of Andaman: A Mission Like No Other
With the blessing of the Bishop and hearts brimming with enthusiasm, the participants embarked on their mission. For the next three days, they were immersed in the vibrant culture of Andaman, visiting parishes in Wimberly Gunj, Prothrapur, Port Blair, Panighat, and Ferrar Gunj.
Santhoshini, a participant, vividly recalls the Holy Spirit’s palpable presence, saying, “Despite language barriers, the love of God transcended, touching the hearts of youth, children, and parents alike.” The team’s way of presenting the Gospel was described as mesmerizing, leaving a lasting impression on everyone they encountered.
From house visits that felt like stepping into another world, to conducting programs that connected deeply with the local community, the participants experienced the richness of Andaman’s culture and the warmth of its people. And in a tradition unique to this region, the washing of hands and feet as a gesture of hospitality left the young missionaries in awe of the humility and grace that permeated the island.
Transformations Under the Tropical Sun
The mission wasn’t just about reaching out—it was about transformation, both for those who served and those who were served. Sharon K Joby captured this essence when she said, “Knowing Him and hearing about Him were two different things. His strength is made perfect in my weakness, and His grace is sufficient for me.” This journey became a crucible where fears were confronted, and faith was forged stronger than ever before.
Judith, another participant, discovered that the power of forgiveness and humility was nothing short of magical. She shared, “SORRY IS MAGICAL. CHALO HAS LED ME TO MAKE FEW VERY IMPORTANT DECISIONS IN LIFE.” The mission opened their eyes to the possibilities that lay ahead, both spiritually and personally.
The Grand Finale: A Celebration of Missionary Spirit
As their time in Andaman drew to a close, the participants gathered at Our Lady of Velankanni Shrine in Panighat, Port Blair, for a final thanksgiving Holy Mass. It was a moment of reflection, gratitude, and deep connection with God. But the journey wasn’t over yet—an evening of sharing experiences at the pastoral center followed, where stories were exchanged, lessons were learned, and new bonds were formed.
The final sessions were focused on living as missionary disciples, with discussions on how to carry the fire of this experience back to their communities. A cultural program with the Andaman Jesus Youth, graced by the ever-encouraging Bishop Visuvasam Selvaraj, was the perfect send-off. By June 11, when they returned home, each participant was brimming with enthusiasm, ready to infuse their families, parishes, and communities with the missionary spirit they had received.
Heroes Behind the Scenes: Making Chalo Andaman a Reality
No great adventure is without its heroes, and “Chalo Andaman” had its own. The tireless efforts of Edvina Teres George, the general coordinator, and Immanuel Sabu, the program coordinator, ensured that every detail was perfect. Spiritual guidance from Fr. Sandeep Neendissery OFM Cap and Sr. Jessy Vadakkoot provided the foundation for this transformative journey. And let’s not forget James, whose music brought new life and energy to every moment. The Andaman Jesus Youth’s hard work and dedication made the mission a resounding success, inspiring everyone involved. Special thanks also go to Fr. Johnson, the youth animator of the Port Blair Diocese, and the pastoral center’s priests and staff who provided unwavering support.

“Chalo Andaman” was more than just a trip; it was a life-altering pilgrimage.
