Doctor, Disciple, and Shepherd: The Inspiring Journey of Rev. Fr. Mathew Abraham, C.Ss.R.

Rev. Fr. Mathew Abraham, C.Ss.R., stands out as a rare and inspiring figure—a qualified medical doctor who chose the path of priesthood after completing his medical studies. Deeply rooted in faith and service, and shaped by his involvement in the Jesus Youth movement, his life reflects a powerful integration of healing and ministry.

From 2016 to 2026, he served as the Director-General of the Catholic Health Association of India (CHAI), where his leadership left a lasting impact on faith-based healthcare across the country. His tenure was marked by a unique blend of clinical expertise and pastoral compassion, enabling him to guide the organization with both professional excellence and a deeply human touch.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Fr. Mathew demonstrated steady and courageous leadership. He ensured the continuity of essential healthcare services while spearheading targeted initiatives to respond to the crisis. His ability to remain calm and mission-focused during uncertainty strengthened CHAI’s outreach when it was needed most.

Under his guidance, CHAI expanded significantly, growing into one of India’s largest healthcare networks and reaching over 21 million people. He also oversaw a major modernization effort, including the renovation of the CHAI Directorate between 2023 and 2025, improving the organization’s infrastructure and efficiency.

Fr. Mathew successfully navigated regulatory challenges, particularly the 2020 FCRA Amendment, ensuring compliance without compromising the organization’s mission. His emphasis on transparency and professionalism helped CHAI adapt to evolving standards.

A strong advocate for inclusion and empowerment, he made a historic decision to mentor and appoint Sr. Dr. Helen Mary as his successor—recognizing the vital role of women, who make up the majority of grassroots healthcare workers in the network.

He was also forward-thinking in embracing technology, promoting digital tools and virtual collaboration even before they became widespread, and advancing the digitization of key programs.

Beyond his achievements, Fr. Mathew is widely remembered for his character. Known for his warmth, humility, and approachability, he led with empathy and a genuine concern for others. Colleagues often describe him as an “elder brother” figure—someone who made people feel seen, valued, and at ease.

His leadership embodied the spirit of service. With a vision that combined global thinking and local action, he remained committed to uplifting marginalized communities, especially in rural and tribal areas.

Rev. Fr. Mathew Abraham’s journey—from doctor to priest, from healer to shepherd—continues to inspire many. His legacy is one of faith in action, compassionate leadership, and a life devoted to serving others.
