Bishop Alex Vadakumthala Shares Vision for Jesus Youth in Interview Following Vatican Appointment

In an insightful interview with Rev. Dominic Emmanuel SVD, Bishop Alex Vadakumthala of the Diocese of Kannur reflected on the journey of the Jesus Youth movement, its global mission, and his recent appointment by the Vatican as the International Ecclesiastical Advisor to Jesus Youth.

Speaking about the appointment, Bishop Alex expressed gratitude for the opportunity to accompany the worldwide movement under the guidance of the Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life. He noted that the new responsibility is an invitation to journey closely with young people as they grow in faith and missionary commitment.

The Bishop traced the origins of Jesus Youth to the early 1980s in Kerala, where a spontaneous movement of young people, inspired by the Holy Spirit and encouraged by supportive priests, gathered for prayer, Bible study, and Christian fellowship. What began as a grassroots initiative has since grown into an international Catholic movement present in more than 40 countries across Asia, Africa, Australia, the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas.

Highlighting one of the movement’s distinctive features, Bishop Alex pointed to its spirit of unity, bringing together young people from different Catholic rites and backgrounds while fostering communion within the Church.

He also spoke about the missionary zeal of Jesus Youth members, many of whom willingly take career breaks or dedicate a year or more of their lives to serve as full-time missionaries. These missionaries are sustained through the prayers, generosity, and support of the global Jesus Youth community.

Referring to major gatherings such as the JAAGO conferences in India, which have attracted thousands of participants, Bishop Alex emphasized the Church’s commitment to accompanying young people with encouragement rather than judgment. He stressed that the Church seeks to nurture creativity, deepen faith, and empower youth to become joyful witnesses of Christ.

Looking ahead, Bishop Alex shared that preparations are in progress for the Ruby Jubilee celebrations marking 40 years of Jesus Youth. The international celebration in Rome is expected to include a special audience with the Holy Father, bringing together members of the movement from around the world.

Concluding the interview, Bishop Alex expressed hope and confidence in the future of Jesus Youth, reaffirming his commitment to serving the movement and accompanying young people as they respond to God’s call with enthusiasm and missionary spirit.
