Beyond the Rain: A Journey of Faith, Fellowship, and Formation in Sohra

As part of the ongoing National Leaders Learning Program in Shillong, participants embarked on a memorable outing to *Sohra (Cherrapunji), one of the wettest places on earth. The group also explored the fascinating *Arwah Caves, turning what could have been just a sightseeing trip into a profound experience of spiritual formation, fellowship, and personal renewal.

The visit was led by Shinto Antony, Scaria Zacharia, Fr. Vincy, Sr. Jaya, National Coordinator Sunny Gudino and Dr. Chackochan Njavallil, who accompanied the participants throughout the journey. The outing beautifully demonstrated that every moment and every occasion can become an opportunity for forming leaders rooted in Christ. Formation is not limited to classrooms, lectures, or speeches; God also teaches through nature, relationships, shared experiences, and life’s unexpected moments.

Finding Peace in Nature

Ridalin Warjri
Assistant Coordinator, Household, Shillong, Meghalaya

Reflecting on the day’s trek, Ridalin shared how Nohkalikai Waterfall left a lasting impression. Although heavy rain obscured the breathtaking view, the powerful sound of the cascading water brought peace to her heart, calmed her mind, and relieved her stress.

While trekking toward Arwah Caves, she delighted in the sight of numerous small waterfalls flowing through the lush landscape. Despite the rain, the journey itself became a source of joy. Inside the caves, she was fascinated by the natural rock formations, markings on the cave walls, and the steady dripping of water, making the exploration an unforgettable experience.

Seeing God’s Lessons in Every Step

Samuel Gaithaipou Reamei
Regional Team, Manipur | Campus In-charge

For Samuel, every stop along the journey carried a deeper spiritual message.

The houses reminded him that our true home is in Christ, built on the firm foundation of His Word. The winding roads and landslide-prone areas reflected life’s uncertainties, calling believers to trust God’s guidance. A stone crusher symbolized how God uses trials to shape character and produce perseverance.

The muddy roads and overgrown footpaths illustrated how neglecting God’s way allows sin and worldly distractions to cloud our walk with Him. Washing feet in a flowing stream became a reminder of the daily cleansing found through confession and God’s forgiveness.

The retreat center resembled a school where God teaches, corrects, and prepares His people for service. Houses standing in dangerous places reminded him that true security is found in God alone, while the simple tin houses reflected the temporary nature of worldly comforts compared to the lasting joy found in Christ.

He concluded that the journey was much more than travelling through beautiful landscapes—it became a living testimony that God continues to speak through His creation and through everyday experiences.

Growing Through God’s Presence

Rinchui Haorei
Prolife Ministry, Manipur

Rinchui reflected that the outing became a beautiful encounter with God’s presence through the fellowship of the group. He experienced God’s providence in the people around him and in the beauty of creation, recognizing that God reveals Himself in both relationships and nature.

The journey also helped him become more aware of the situations and realities surrounding him, encouraging a deeper sensitivity to God’s work in everyday life. Above all, the experience strengthened his spiritual journey, helping him grow deeper in his relationship with God and reaffirming that every shared experience can become an opportunity for spiritual formation.

The Gift of Fellowship

Pius Bareh
National Mission Team Member, Meghalaya

Pius described the outing as one of the most refreshing experiences he had enjoyed after a long time.

He expressed gratitude for the fellowship, the journey, and the beauty of nature, saying that he was able to breathe fresh air with a joyful heart. He attributed his inner peace to the openness of sharing and the prayers offered together during the program.

More than the scenic beauty, what deeply touched him was the genuine fellowship marked by freedom, love, and purity. Witnessing the magnificence of creation strengthened his faith in God, reminding him that the Creator continues to perform wonders beyond human imagination. He believes the memories of this journey will remain with him throughout his life and inspire him as he accompanies others in their own faith journeys.

God’s Plan Was Better Than the View

Grace Kuba
Nagaland

Grace reflected that although the group could not fully enjoy the famous waterfalls or panoramic views because of the rain, she came to see God’s purpose in it.

She observed that had the weather been clear, everyone might have scattered in different directions, absorbed in taking photographs and enjoying the scenery individually. Instead, the rain brought everyone closer together.

The group laughed together, shared conversations, and simply enjoyed one another’s company. For Grace, it was this spirit of togetherness that became the greatest blessing of the day. She believed that God’s grace filled every heart with joy despite the circumstances, transforming what initially seemed disappointing into one of the most meaningful moments of the entire program.

Formation Beyond the Classroom

The Sohra outing became a powerful reminder that authentic leadership formation happens not only in seminar halls but also along mountain roads, beneath waterfalls, inside caves, during shared conversations, and through the quiet lessons of nature.

As the National Leaders Learning Program continues in Shillong, experiences like these affirm that Christ forms leaders in every circumstance. Every journey can become a classroom, every challenge a lesson, every conversation an opportunity for growth, and every moment an encounter with God’s grace.
