Beyond Measure: God’s Care on the Pilgrimage to Rome
Sr. Divya, KJYC animator, shares how God and people were involved in her journey to participate in the GO Conference held in Rome from October 20–25, celebrating the 40th year of inception of Jesus Youth and the 10th anniversary of being recognized by the Holy See as a Pontifical Association of the Christian Faithful:
Whenever anyone asks me about this, I have an hour-long narration to share—it is truly a deep faith experience for me.
Initially, I did not have a passport or anything. Even though updates were coming in our KJYC group around April–May, I never really wished or planned to go. But around June, when I saw the participant list and noticed names like Sr. Liz Maria, I casually gave her a call. When she heard I wasn’t coming, she encouraged and boosted me, saying, “Couldn’t you have just asked? Come on, child”. That is where it all began.
I immediately contacted Johnson, who told me there was enough time—I just needed to apply for a passport, get permission, and the visa processing would start around August. When I called Godwin, the coordinator, he also told me to just secure permission and they would take care of the rest.
However, after praying, I felt a strong conviction. Jesus Youth would sponsor me, but knowing that their funds come from the hard work and sponsorships of many people, I felt that as a religious, my congregation should also contribute what we can. I told Godwin my condition: I would ask for permission on the terms that my congregation covers half—such as my flight tickets and travel expenses—while Jesus Youth could handle the conference registration. Though Godwin simply advised me to ask for permission directly, I presented this exact condition to Mother. After a short wait for council approval, permission was granted.
Next, I went to ask the school manager Father for five days of leave. The moment I asked, Father asked, “Is it only the conference? Normally, when people travel this far, there is a pilgrimage too, isn’t there?” I told him I had only sought permission for this much, but Father motivated me, saying, “Divya, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity; you don’t always get a chance to go and return like this. If you are going, you must also go for the pilgrimage”. It was Vicar Achan who truly gave me that motivation and desire to go.
From that point on, the Lord’s hand was evident through so many people. Whether it was preparing the passport, going for the visa processing, or handling the delay when my visa didn’t arrive by courier and had to be collected from the VFS office, the Lord arranged person after person to help me in every situation—almost as if He was acting directly because He couldn’t come in person. From the smallest, minute details to the largest, even during my train journey to Ernakulam, so many people were involved.
I had neither desired nor asked for any of this, but what the Lord gave in return was multiplied beyond measure. His care and love were immense. Throughout the journey, we never missed anything—be it Holy Mass, prayers, or meals. Everything was well-arranged and well-prepared. The Lord walked beside us, guiding and leading everything through our leaders and those around us. It was an extraordinary experience of God.
