The Cultural Exchange Experience and the Inspiring Contribution of Sr. Vigi Rose

Sr. Vigi Rose CMC has long been a dedicated animator of Jesus Youth and a remarkable inspiration to many. Beginning her journey as a Hindi professor in Kerala, she later responded wholeheartedly to God’s call by joining the Mission Province of the CMC (Hazaribag) Congregation. Through her years of service and commitment, she played an instrumental role in initiating the Cultural Exchange Program within Jesus Youth—an initiative that became a bridge connecting people, cultures, and faith experiences.

A recent cultural exchange journey beautifully reflected the fruits of this vision. A group consisting of six women from Simdega–Dingurpani and a sister from Bhagalpur Diocese embarked on a meaningful visit to Kerala as part of a Cultural Exchange initiative. The team began their journey on May 1 and arrived at Muringoor on May 3, where they participated in a retreat experience. This retreat offered a spiritually enriching beginning and prepared them for deeper cultural and community encounters.

Following the retreat, the group proceeded to Kothamangalam, where arrangements had been thoughtfully made through prior coordination with the diocesan director and leaders of the Mathrusangam. What stood out throughout the journey was the overwhelming sense of welcome and hospitality extended to the visitors. They were received warmly with flowers, meals, and heartfelt care, making them feel less like visitors and more like members of a family. The participants expressed that the experience felt like receiving exceptional hospitality and love beyond formal expectations. They stayed in parishes Nellimattom, belonging to the Diocese of Kothamangalam. For four nights and a Four days times They stayed at CMC convent hostel at Kothamangalam.

The group later visited family homes and community centers where every effort had been made to ensure their comfort. Accommodation and support were generously provided, and despite being away from home, they experienced an atmosphere of belonging and affection. The openness and readiness of communities to host and care for the participants reflected the spirit of Christian fellowship and shared mission.

A particularly touching aspect of the exchange involved participants from economically challenged backgrounds, some of whom had very limited exposure to travel and new experiences. Host families opened their homes and hearts, providing not only food and accommodation but also dignity, care, and companionship. Rather than mere assistance, what unfolded was an experience of genuine solidarity and human connection.

The visitors also had opportunities to engage with local communities and observe various initiatives undertaken by women’s groups and institutions. They witnessed activities similar to Kudumbashree initiatives, explored community-based projects, and learned traditional food preparation methods such as making Achappam and Kuzhalappam. Visits to nurseries, gardens, and institutions like Darshana also provided insights into vocational activities such as tailoring hospital materials, bags, and garments.

An especially memorable moment was their meeting with the Bishop. In a warm and simple atmosphere, the group had the opportunity to interact personally, receiving encouragement and support for their journey.

As the program concluded, youth members from various parishes extended their support to ensure the safe travel and comfort of the participants, helping with luggage and travel arrangements. These gestures reflected the vibrant spirit of service and care within the Jesus Youth community.

Though the schedule became demanding and personal plans had to be adjusted, the journey was ultimately experienced as a blessing filled with grace. Even unexpected challenges such as weather delays became part of a meaningful experience. Looking back, participants described the entire journey as deeply enriching and joyful.

This Cultural Exchange Program stands as a living testimony to the vision that Sr. Vigi Rose helped nurture—a vision where faith transcends geography and cultural boundaries. It demonstrates how simple acts of hospitality, openness, and shared experiences can transform lives and strengthen communities. The journey remains a powerful reminder that mission is ultimately about encountering Christ through people and discovering unity amidst diversity.
