Fr. Fabian Toppo Appointed as New Bishop of Jalpaiguri

Bangalore, February 8, 2025 (CCBI): The Holy Father, Pope Francis, has appointed Fr. Fabian Toppo (64) as the new Bishop of Jalpaiguri on February 8, 2025. He currently serves as Professor and Spiritual Director at Morning Star Regional Seminary and College, Kolkata. This appointment comes following the resignation of Bishop Clement Tirkey (77), which the Pope has accepted in accordance with Canon Law.

A Life Dedicated to Service

Born on December 21, 1960, in Darupisa, Diocese of Jashpur, Chhattisgarh, Fr. Toppo has a distinguished academic and pastoral background. He completed his Philosophy studies at the Papal Seminary in Pune and later pursued Theology at the Pontifical Urbaniana University in Rome. His academic achievements include a Master’s degree in English from the University of North Bengal and a Doctorate in Biblical Theology from the Pontifical Urbaniana University in Rome, along with a Diploma in Canonical Administrative Law.

A Journey of Pastoral Commitment

Fr. Toppo was ordained a priest on December 3, 1994, for the Diocese of Jalpaiguri. Since then, he has served in various pastoral and academic roles:

1994-1998: Director of the Candidates’ House and Coordinator for Ecumenism and Interreligious Dialogue, Jalpaiguri.

1998-2001: Pastor of Shanti Rani Parish in Mongradagni.

2002-2007: Professor at Morning Star Regional Seminary and College, Kolkata.

2016-Present: Professor of Biblical Theology and Spiritual Director at Morning Star Seminary.

2020-2021: Administrator of Morning Star Regional Seminary and College.

With decades of experience in pastoral care, theological education, and interreligious dialogue, Bishop-elect Fabian Toppo is set to lead the Diocese of Jalpaiguri with wisdom and spiritual guidance. The faithful of the diocese welcome this new chapter under his leadership.
